Why 'motivation is rubbish' and what you need

When one of the best motivating speakers in the world says "motivation is rubbish," you may listen. This can happen if you hear the recently released Audible Original coaching series, Kick Ass With Mel Robbins.

We are often hung up at the moment of decision: I go to the gym Still stay on the sofa? Will I keep this relationship or break it? Am I looking for a new job or staying in my current job? It is normal to feel scared or experience self-doubt when making a decision. But allowing those things to stop you is an option.

Your entire life is defined by the gap between your initial embarrassment and you decide to take action (or not take action). And, as Robbins said, the gap is about five seconds.

"There is a five-second gap between inspiration and fear closure, and there is a five-second gap between confidence and self-doubt," she said.

The five-second gap that Robbins refers to is where we expand or shrink. When you realize that you can narrow the gap by making a five-second decision to extend your life, you now have the secret to tapping potential and changing your life.

Try for yourself!

Think about one aspect of life that you are trying to change, or a habit you are trying to adopt. Now break it down into a smaller concept and answer the question: "What can you make every five-second decision that day will help you code this new habit?"

When you don't have A five-second decision occurs when you succumb to the self-doubt you encounter when trying to take action. In other words, it is your moment that feels self-doubt intrusion into your mind, going backwards from five points and then starting to act.

You now have the basis for a five-second rule.

For example, if you want to start exercising in the morning instead of the third time on the alertSnoring, counting back from five o'clock and getting up. Don't give yourself time to find excuses and create self-doubt. Count down from five o'clock and take action.

Or, if you're trying to set a limit, try using a five-second rule to help you say "no." Let us say that a colleague often unloads your work to you. If people like you, you may let them continue to say "yes".

Input: Five second rule. The next time your colleague approaches you, take a deep breath, the number, 5-4-3-2-1, and say "no". Failure to respond immediately interrupts your habit of saying "yes" to this person and allows you to make a five-second decision that can change your life.

Maybe you want to start researching your passion project but you always make excuses when you get back home and work tired. If it's really your priority, once you get home, sit in front of your computer, count down from five, and then start.

But this is 诀窍: you have to count down. When you count backwards, Robbins says you will attract your prefrontal cortex, which will help you beat the excuse. Now you have taken a step toward overcoming all the habits that have got you into trouble.

This sounds simple - and may be too good to be possible - but it does work.
