7 Tips and Tricks for Using Crayons (And Cleaning Up After Them)

Whether you're cleaning up your child's artwork or repurposing their old crayons, check out these engaging ideas.

Wet-Saw Marking Tip

Use a crayon to draw the cutting line on tile before using a wet saw. Unlike a pen or pencil line, a crayon mark won’t wash off and is easier to see in the muddy water.

Use Baking Soda for Crayon Marks on Walls

Have your walls been redecorated with some original crayon masterpieces? Don’t lose your cool. Just grab a rag, dip it in some baking soda and lightly scrub the marks. They will come off with a minimal amount of effort and give your young Picasso a fresh, new canvas.

Reach for a Jar of Coconut Oil

Try cleaning up a crayon mess with coconut oil! Simply dampen a cloth with the oil and wipe the marks from your walls. Wash away any residue with a sponge and warm, soapy water.

You Can Also Try Toothpaste

You can also fight back with that fluoride-filled tube of toothpaste. Smear some on the wall and rub with a damp cloth to remove the crayon marks. Of course, you can always try a more abrasive approach like steel wool.

Use Steel Wool With Caution

Steel wool is just abrasive enough to remove the crayon marks. Just make sure to test it in an inconspicuous spot first.

Make a Crayon Picture Frame

A crayon picture frame can be a quick DIY project for parents and children. Just pick up a picture frame, crayons, a saw and a glue gun. Cut crayons to fit the frame and glue them on for an easy gift. If you want to hang the picture frame, check out how to do it right.

You Can Also Recycle Them

They may be small, but those crayons are clogging up our landfills at a rapid rate. Every year more than half a million pounds of crayons are thrown away. Since crayons never biodegrade, that waxy sludge becomes quite a problem within our landfills.

Instead, send those crayons over to the Crayon Initiative. They melt down crayons and remanufacture them, sending them off to art programs at children’s hospitals across the U.S.
