Weight training after concussion

Concussion can cause severe brain damage, and depending on its severity, if you fail to take care of yourself later, it can cause long-term health consequences or even death. If you want to resume weight training after a concussion, you must be careful.

Before lifting

Concussion, please consult a doctor for a neuropsychological test. Even if you don't notice immediate or persistent symptoms, your doctor can determine the extent of the injury and make sure there are no serious injuries. Even if you are not engaged in sports such as weight, please consult a doctor. This is especially important if you have headaches, nausea, dizziness or blurred vision at any time after the initial injury.

Return to training

Do not resume any weight training when symptoms appear. Concussion continues, even if the symptoms have been greatly reduced. If you still have any symptoms, your brain still needs time to heal, and intense activity can inhibit the healing process or cause more damage. Most importantly, please follow the doctor's advice. For example, if your doctor determines that you should avoid 30 days of weight training and your symptoms resolve after only 10 days, you should wait for a full 30 days.

If symptoms recur

Even if you believe that your injury is completely healed, be prepared as the symptoms may recover with strenuous activity. 2007 Case Study from the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience, vol. 19. An example was recorded in which a stubborn hockey player resumed practicing on the surface after healing his wound. After returning to practice, he noticed that the symptoms reappeared. If the intense activity of weight training causes the symptoms to recover, stop training immediately and give yourself more time to heal. If the problem persists each time you resume training, please consult your doctor.

Start Easy

Even if you are extremely sure that your injury has healed, don't think that you can recover your training plan with the rigor of your previous enjoyment. Gradually increase resistance from lightweight.
